Calling from the sky, doubtless transparent in its shade of blue

Daniel Joussef

Daniel Jouseff (Swedish, b. 1975, lives and works in Stockholm and London) Born in Stockholm to immigrant parents belonging to a Christian minority of Palestine, Daniel Jouseff’s work often revolves around archetypes of the outsider. The embedded recursive otherness of Jouseff’s own identity (a born national within a religiously dissimilar group of a minority immigrant population) informs the artist’s angst-filled neo-impressionist paintings. A clash of harsh mark-making and pop-culture glamor are invested in each work, either overtly by abstract marks painted directly atop images culled from mainstream magazines, television, or pornography, or more subtly through the contrast of the visceral brushstrokes and the intended context of the work: clean-lined luxury homes and sparse minimal gallery space.
