Foxy [Dogami Series]

Gerardo Hacer
2008
Powder-coated steel; #8
20.5028.50

Moving from the impromptu world of graffiti and street art to formal sculpture, Gerardo Hacer found his true form after studying welding at LA Trade Tech and finding inspiration in Alexander Calder's Four Arches. Now known for his origami-inspired metal sculptures of "folded" animals, the artist's roots shine through in a new way. The bravado and bold action of graffiti coupled with an implied impermanence reaches new audiences through this more sanctioned media. A Calder-like sense of balance holds the paradoxical impression together making Hacer sculptures both fragile and formidable in their seeming weighty defiance of gravity and time–an apt analogy for the power of memory and long lasting implications of childhood experience.
