Terri Thomas
2010
Swarovski Crystals and oil on canvas
72.0064.00
Price: $12,000 USD

Terri Thomas is an established interdisciplinary artist that discloses autobiographical narratives obscured within a variety of constructed themes.  As a twin, the artist grew up observing how societal expectations developed as the media continued to negate individuality while over-sexualizing and stereotyping twins in advertising for the sake of selling products. This, combined with an illustrious career in the fashion industry, caused Thomas to become attentive in how we are conditioned to desire, identify with, and be informed by the media. Her art is agonistic, allowing contrasting viewpoints to rise to the surface of each work. The visual conversations shift between societal and art historical ideologies, conflicting narratives, double-entendres, and subjects that seem to move in and out of perceived power. Her work underscores the tension between agency and passivity, freedom and subjugation, revealing and concealing, anti-aesthetics and strategies of beauty, extreme sincerity, or a mocking critique that only the viewer can solve.
