KAWS
2015
Portfolio of 10 silkscreens
Edition of 100, signed
35.0023.00

Blurring the boundaries between fine and commercial art, KAWS– product designer, artist, illustrator, painter, sculptor and toymaker– creates his cartoonish figures, such as his “Companion” and reimagined versions of pop characters like Mickey Mouse and the Michelin Man. He began his career as a graffiti artist in New York in the early 1990s. KAWS started subverting imagery on billboards, bus shelters and phone booth advertisements. These reworked ads were at first left alone, lasting for up to several months, but as KAWS’ popularity skyrocketed, the ads became increasingly sought after. Today his work can be found in the collections at the High Museum, Atlanta, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Rosenblum Collection in Paris.
